The Ethics and Research Management Department ensures the development of quality and consistency in all types of research conducted within the GHS. The Department serves as the secretariat for the Ghana Health Service Ethics Review Committee which is responsible for reviewing all health research protocols to ensure compliance with prevailing ethical standards. The Department also conducts monitoring of ongoing research studies to ensure compliance with the approved protocols and in accordance with best research practices. The Department currently has two Units – Ethics Unit and Research Management Unit.

Functions

• Foster collaboration with the secretariats of the various Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) within the Ghana Health Service
• Oversee the establishment and operations of new IRBs in the Ghana Health Service
• Provides Capacity building on Health Research Ethics.
• Coordinates the processes involved in ethical review of health development of Standard Operating Procedures of all ERCs/IRBs within the GHS
