Advancements in Combating Soil-Transmitted Helminth Infections: A Glimpse into the REALISE Study
NNeglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) continue to pose significant health challenges, with soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections being among the most prevalent. These infections are estimated to afflict over 1.5 billion individuals annually, predominantly affecting children and adolescents. In response, preventive chemotherapy, including the use of Albendazole, has been employed to combat STH infections, particularly in school-aged children.
Exciting advancements have emerged with the development of a new single-dose Albendazole-Ivermectin coformulation, showing promising treatment outcomes in early phase trials. To further evaluate its safety and effectiveness in real-world settings, the REALISE (Real-world Evaluation of Albendazole-Ivermectin Coformulation Safety and Effectiveness) study is set to take place in the Nzema East Municipality of Ghana's Western Region.
Recently, the study team led by the Principal Investigators; Dr. Rexford Abraham Oduro, Director of the Research and Development Division, and Dr. Joseph Larbi Opare, Programme Manager of the Neglected Tropical Diseases Programme, from the Ghana Health Service visited the study site in Axim, this visit provided invaluable insights into the study's objectives and anticipated impact.
Stay tuned as we bring you exclusive updates and insights from the REALISE study, as we strive towards a world free from the burden of neglected tropical diseases.
